It is better to be safe than sorry. We have had a couple of instances now where upgrades have failed, causing some hassles with getting pulse up and running again. In most cases, users do backup there databases, but not always. So, since we can, we should give them a hand by running a backup as part of the upgrade process. This way, if something does go wrong, we have a way to roll back the changes.
